The salons of Paris preceded the Revolution. The coffeehouses of London preceded the Reform Acts. These are the rooms.

The Macartney Problem
Navigating the West’s China blind spot.
In 1793, Lord Macartney arrived in China with telescopes and clocks, and left having understood nothing. The West has been running the same embassy ever since. For one evening at The Ritz London, the documents come to the table in the original Mandarin: State Council directives, ministry technical standards, Five Year Plan language nobody in the room has read, because almost nobody in the West can. Then the game: five claims about China’s next move. The room bets. The documents decide. The reveal shows what an entire advisory infrastructure has been missing, and why the pattern was legible all along to anyone reading at the source.

The Terms of 2051
A governance salon on the nine functions of a life.
Three commissions of guests, each handed a different set of functions: courtship, knowledge, cognition, narrative, enforcement, housing, labor, commerce, legibility. Each writes terms, seals them in wax, and the wheel reveals the result every previous century discovered the hard way: no room covers all nine, and the terms contradict. The charter cannot be written from separate rooms. That is the argument of the evening, made by the evening. Dinner, candlelight, and a jazz quartet close what the sealing wax opens.
